It began with me finding a way to cheese the game. I’d discovered I could take down groups of enemies on my own, up to a dozen of them, simply by riding out of their reach on my horse and slowing down just enough to carefully aim my bow and headshot them. NPD Group reports (thanks, NME) that despite being free-to-play - albeit with in-game purchases - MultiVersus is the highest-grossing game of July 2022, due in part to its Founder Packs promotion. It may not sound like a particularly impressive feat but to put it into perspective, since its release in February, Elden Ring has been the best-selling game every month but one. What is it about the music in Vampyr that appeals to me so much? I’ve played plenty of games with great music but this was the first to really make me think about it, to listen, to contemplate, to wonder. Maybe it’s the loneliness of the cello. There’s a powerful melancholy and almost yearning quality to it, in the way the bow sweeps the strings and makes that rasping, sonorous wave of noise; in and out, the sound lapping at your attention....
Never Yield - or rather, Aerial_Knight’s Never - is a 3D side-scroller in the vain of endless runner that sees players stampeding across a strikingly designed future Tokyo, all to a winning soundtrack created by Detroit Artist. Eurogamer never got around to reviewing this one, but Christian Donlan seemed quite taken with its rhythms a while back. “It’s gently colour-coded,” he wrote, “which affords an idiot like me an extra bit of help, but what really makes the game special is the things you’re leaping and rolling and sliding to avoid… Drones buzz overhead, vans chase you and then collide, or flip through the air almost taking your head off....
Amazing Bomberman will be available to download on the iOS Apple Arcade this Friday (5th August). The release of Amazing Bomberman will introduce “musical mayhem to the storied series” and see players “use various bomb types to smash obstacles and collect special items as the stage changes to match different songs”. Konami promises Amazing Bomberman will offer users easy to play online battles, with the game catering to both solo players and those that want to battle it out with friends (which can be done through the aptly named “friend battle” mode)....

However, a new trailer for Village’s The Winter’s Expansion DLC has shown off more from its new story, Shadows of Rose, including what these powers are. Shared as part of Capcom’s Tokyo Game Show presentation, this trailer reveals that Rose is actually able to freeze her enemies in their tracks. This new freezing mechanic means that Rose will be able to “target [her enemies] weak points and defeat them quickly” - something that will be incredibly important in the twisted realm this story takes place in, as Capcom stated a “single attack [here] can be fatal”....
Patch 1.04 has improved stability of gameplay and made a large number of balance tweaks to weapons, sorceries, and weapon skills. It also adds an option to change camera auto-rotation and some additional event phases for the NPC Patches. In particular, the attack speed of colossal weapons has been increased to make them a more viable option for pure melee builds. A lot of sorceries have now been buffed, with decreased incantation time and lower FP costs....
Newcastle, who’ll be Season 13’s latest playable hero (sorry to disappoint if you had other ideas), is described as the Hero of Harris Valley, but, more importantly in lore terms, has a direct connection to another Apex Legends character - with Respawn confirming Newcastle to be none other than Jackson Williams, the long-missing brother of Bangalore. Newcastle’s arrival in Apex Legends isn’t too much of a surprise, of course; back in March, a huge Apex Legends leak seemingly revealed, accurately it now appears, the game’s next nine seasons’ worth of unannounced heroes - with Newcastle being the most likely candidate for Season 13 at the time, given his advanced stages of development....
Today brings a new patch for the game, which makes a handful of changes along with “select bug fixes”. As part of the patch notes, Nintendo has acknowledged the widespread performance issues found within the game and documented on social media. Nintendo’s 2020 gigaleak, which revealed eye-opening prototypes for Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario Kart, Star Fox 2 and more, also contained the source code for Super Mario Advance - a game that reuses samples from 1990 SNES classic Super Mario World. Twitter user The Brickster found proper names for many instruments in Super Mario World, which helped other tinkerers find the source for those samples. With the source samples discovered, work on restoring Koji Kondo’s iconic 30-year-old music began....
In 2021, that’s surely about to change, and after a period of relative silence - understandable, of course, given the global circumstances and the pressures they’ve placed on developers - Nintendo is set for its most significant year since the launch of the Switch back in 2017. An update to Nintendo’s Japanese repair and warranty regulations in October warned customers they may no longer be eligible for a product repair or replacement if they are found to have behaved inappropriately to staff. This includes instances where a staff member has been threatened or verbally abused, or where a customer may have been deliberately wasting their time. “We made the decision after concluding our customers would understand because of the reputation we have built of faithfully responding to them,” Nintendo told Kyodo News....
This new section offers users the chance to earn ‘My Nintendo Platinum Points’, which can then be redeemed for exclusive items. Nintendo says the missions that players will now find on their Switch will most likely encompass things that many are already doing, making its new rewards easy to get hold of. Simple things such as playing online or dipping one’s toes into NSO’s library of classic games will help users collect their platinum points....

No Man’s Sky’s Frontiers update - the 17th (!) to release since launch - arrives today on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, bringing something a little bit different to Hello Games’ ever-expanding exploratory space sim. Players can now stumble across procedurally generated Mos-Eisley-like settlements while exploring inhabited planets around the galaxy, each featuring unique buildings, neighbourhood layouts, colour schemes, and interior and exterior decorations. Intriguingly, settlements serve as more than just points of interest for roving space tourists; players can agree to become the overseer of an ungoverned settlement, whereupon they’ll be placed in charge of everything from town planning and treasury management to policy making and conflict resolution, even defending from enemy attacks when required....
Folding into the broader narrative of Cosmo D’s interconnected Off-Peak City games (so far consisting of 2015’s Off-Peak, 2017’s The Norwood Suite, and its 2020 follow-up Tales from Off-Peak City Vol. 1), Betrayal At Club Low sees players going undercover to attempt a rescue mission of sorts by infiltrating a “deceptively dangerous” nightclub/former coffin factory/“haven for wild-limbed dancing, mind-altering music and shady characters”. While previous games in the series were largely focussed on relaxed roaming and light puzzling as players soaked up their deliciously off-kilter sensibilities, Betrayal at Club Low does things a little differently, drawing inspiration from “short, punchy, independent zine RPGs” in order to evoke the feel of a one-off tabletop session....
