Core to Season 8 is a new faction system, enabling players to sign up to either the Pirate Lord’s Guardians of Fortune or Flameheart’s Servants of the Flame using the new Hourglass of Fate found on the Captain’s Table of every ship. Once active, players can either represent their faction simply by taking on any opposing crews they spot in the world, or they can use the war map to immediately begin matchmaking to find an equally skilled opposing crew....

The game Sega teased last month (and subsequently pilloried on YouTube for being a mobile game) is called Sin Chronicle, and it’s set for iOS and Android on 15th December in Japan. A western release has yet to be announced. The choose your own ending aspect revolves around the two choices players have to choose from at the end of each chapter....

Available today is the Disney farming life sim Disney Dreamlight Valley featuring a cast of well-known characters. The game is launching in early access available across a number of platforms, with Game Pass users getting access to exclusive cosmetics and some in-game currency (across cloud, console and PC). That’s not to say they don’t do that at all - there are some great games about having conversations. I will always recommend Bithell Games’ Subsurface Circular, available on PC and Switch, to anyone even remotely interested in conversational mechanics, and the recent We should talk. by Insatiable Cycle, available on PC, uses an interesting modular conversation system. But right now, my favourite game about having conversations is Signs of the Sojourner....

Announced during QuakeCon’s Skyrim panel, the Anniversary Edition arrives on 11th November - exactly ten years after the launch of the original version - and bundles together 2016’s Skyrim Special Edition and a healthy chunk of additional content. Specifically, it’ll feature over 500 Creation Club elements - Creation Club being Bethesda’s curated pool of officially sanctioned mods, which would usually need to be purchased with credits - including quests, dungeons, bosses, weapons, and spells....

Microsoft Solitaire Collection, which, by the way, is available via Xbox Game Pass for PC, now has a Halo theme that lets you add a UNSC background and Halo-themed card backs. Fans will spot Cortana rooting for the clubs and Master Chief playing for the spades. There are other Halo characters on the cards, too, but I won’t spoil the surprise. Unfortunately, it appears the update came with an unwelcome surprise for some PC players: the inability to aim. The bug prevents players from moving their mouse horizontally, an essential feature of first person shooters last time I checked. Fortunately, there does appear to be a fix. DICE’s lead game designer, Florian, suggests resetting your keyboard bindings or deleting the Battlefield 2042 game folder in Documents. They also suggest a less extreme way to fix the bug is to edit your profile data (PROFSAVE_profile) located in the same folder with a text editor, and remove the line “GstKeyBinding....

It’s a backlash that Sonic Team was at least prepared for. “We knew people were going to start watching videos of Sonic Frontiers and not be able to play it,” creative officer Takashi Iizuka tells us of the fan response. “We’re showing them this new open zone format when they still don’t really even understand what open zone is. We were curious what kind of the feedback there would be and we do understand the comments that are coming in, because they don’t know what open zone and what this new open zone gameplay is supposed to be....

According to Comicbook, the sequel has clocked up an impressive $71 million - that’s £54.4m - since its premier on Friday; for context, the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie grossed $58m (£44m) on its opening weekend. Interestingly, this makes it Jim Carrey’s biggest domestic opener ever, eclipsing 2003’s Bruce Almighty which grossed $68m during it’s opening weekend in the States. It also marks Paramount’s fifth number-one movie of the pandemic, too....

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the tech would apparently allow any “non-luminous passive object being held by the user” to be transformed into a controller. Objects would apparently be scanned with a camera, which would track items based on pixels, contours and colours. A game could be trained to recognise objects as controllers, or tell users which household items could be used as a controller. The patent application uses bananas and oranges as examples, explaining that the system would be able to track an object’s movement, so the object could be used to steer an in-game camera - or to accelerate, decelerate and brake....

Ubisoft shared the news during its latest earnings call, only saying it had made the decision to cancel all four titles after taking into account the “more uncertain economic environment”. Ghost Recon Frontline, which received a less-than-stellar reception when it was announced last October, was to be a new free-to-play instalment in Ubisoft’s long-running military shooter series. The core experience would have featured a large-scale, battle-royale-style 102-person mode where teams of three players completed objectives before calling for extraction, but other modes were also detailed....

Confirmation came by way of Disney’s Star Wars Celebration 2022, which confirmed the 2004 Xbox game is now on the way to Nintendo’s handheld system. “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords is coming to Nintendo Switch on June 8th, 2022!” Nintendo exclaims on its official YouTube channel. “Will you follow the light side and save the Galaxy, or succumb to the dark side and bring it all down?...

The Swedish company reported its 2020 financial results, which show a loss before tax of SEK 130.5m (£11.3m), compared to a loss of SEK 452.4m (£39.3m) in 2019. The losses continue, but 2020 was an improved year for Starbreeze. It paid off a large proportion of its debts, and there is improvement from co-op shooter Payday 2. Starbreeze said by late December, Payday 2 had become the biggest game community on Steam, with 7....

Whilst the number includes players who are idle - that is, signed in but not actively playing anything - Steam’s own analytics show that a new peak of 31,349,780 concurrent players was set over the weekend. As is often the case, third-party tracker SteamDB boasts a slightly different number - a higher figure of 31,379,760 concurrent players - 9.3 of whom were actively online and gaming at the time the record was set....
