ActRaiser initially released for Super Nintendo back in 1990, drawing praise for its unusual combination of side-scrolling, sword-swinging action-platforming and god-game-like top-down urban planning as players, in the role of the Lord of Light, attempted to save mankind from the evil Lord of Dark. Oh, and it had some cracking music too. All of that returns in the newly announced ActRaiser Renaissance, which features “remastered” 2D new visuals, new stories, expanded action and realm management gameplay, new action stages, a new realm and boss, plus new music - including 15 new tracks and re-arranged original music by Actraiser composer Yuzo Koshiro....

Hotfix 1.12 promises a fix to a vulnerability that allowed crafted save files to take advantage of a buffer overflow, which redirected the running thread to an old DLL from 2010, at a fixed address which lacked modern protections. The vulnerability meant that save files, which are normally considered a bit safer to download, could essentially be turned into executables that could carry out “any locally executed virus” on a user’s PC - without the user noticing....

Back in January, PC servers for all Dark Souls games were shuttered due to security issues - and remained down for months. In July, at the 183 day mark, there were signs that Dark Souls 3 could be back online soon - but still no fix. Now, at well over 200 days, the PC servers for Dark Souls 3 are now live again. Rejoice! Today’s announcement was made on the official Dark Souls Twitter account, alongside a messsage stating that FromSoftware was “working to restore these features for all other [Dark Souls] titles”....

At that time the game was being developed by Yager Development, but when that studio was removed from the project in 2015, Sumo Digital took over and attempted to pick up the pieces. Sumo’s involvement was short lived though and it was also taken off development sometime around 2019. After that, Dambuster Studios took up the reins and since then all has been worringly quiet. I’m sure I’m not the only person out there who thought that this troubled sequel was dead in the water but surprise, surprise, not only has Dead Island 2 risen from the grave in true zombie fashion, but it also has an actual, set in stone release date....

Obviously, the content improvements of the Director’s Cut make their way across, but is there anything new from a technical perspective? Well, the original Death Stranding port’s ‘default’ graphics settings effectively delivered PS4 Pro quality to PC, with only limited upwards scalability. In the case of the Director’s Cut, default now delivers the same improved visuals as PS5, which basically means that draw distance has been pushed out a touch while everything else remains much the same....

Announced at the PC Gaming Show, the game is developed by Necrosoft Games and set for release in 2023 across PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch. College is hell in this game, as student Faye - the last living heir to a long-forgotten family of demon hunters - must balance college life with an impending apocalypse. Writing in a now-deleted post on reddit (thanks, PC Gamer), the first-person shooter fan stated they had been stopped by a security guard after entering the car park of the company’s office in Austin, Texas on Monday, 31st October. The fan says they “politely” asked to be let into the office to complain about their “wrongful” Modern Warfare 2 ban, having spent $140 on a special edition version of the game....

“Cumulative worldwide sales of ‘DMC5’ have exceeded 5m units,” the developer tweeted today (translated via Mp1st). “Thank you for your support.” In light of this news, industry veteran Benji-Sales shared a comparison of how this stacks up to other games in the series. As it stands currently, the next best-selling entry is Devil May Cry 4, which has sold 4.8m units. Meanwhile, at the end of the spectrum sits the Devil May Cry HD Collection with 1....

Meanwhile, it’s a good week for PC news, as in addition to the Spider-Man news, Activision has appeared on Steam as an official publisher - a reversal from the previous strategy that saw Call of Duty games distributed via the Blizzard launcher....

We’ll have more on Forza Horizon 5 soon, but we have had access to the recent preview build played by Oli last week and in our opinion, this is odds on in delivering one of the most exciting games of the year. We’ve only had access to an Xbox Series build, but this has it all - genuine ’next-gen’ spectacle and outrageous action while still retaining Forza’s signature simulation core....

Confirmation came via a recent developer Q&A. While members of the Asobo Studio development team stopped short of confirming when, precisely, DLSS will arrive for PC players, they did update us on what’s coming to the excellent flight sim game in the first half of 2022. The livestream also confirmed there’s going to be “several surprise add-on releases” later this year, as well as a new propeller simulation, including prop wash, for Cessna and King Air aircraft with Sim Update 8, which is expected to release on 1st March....

Gerda: A Flame in Winter is a new narrative game from Danish studio PortaPlay and was announced at the recent Nintendo Indie Showcase. Players will take the role of a nurse during the German occupation of Denmark in World War 2. The game is story-driven and gameplay will involve a mix of exploration, dialogue, and resource and relationships management as the game poses the question: how far would you go to protect your loved ones?...

Following from yesterday’s blog post revealing the November line-up forXbox Game Pass, the addition of Dune: Spice Wars was revealed yesterday as part of Paris Games Week. Dune: Spice Wars is currently in early access, and its latest update back in June added plenty of key features including multiplayer on dedicated servers and peer-to-peer connections. Xbox has not confirmed when Dune: Spice Wars will be available other than stating we can expect it “soon”....

Head to the Fish Eye Canteen and you’ll find new character Harper, who has new things for you to do in return for ranked rewards. Daily and weekly bounties, two new currencies, fresh types of Infected enemies have also been added, alongside that photo mode which developer Techland promises includes special effects to “allow you to create unique sequences straight from the action movies”. Back in January, Techland said it would “guarantee” at least five years’ worth of support for Dying Light 2 following the game’s February arrival....

Not many could slow their fall from a great height by ballooning out huge quantities of snot to make some kind of bogey-chute, but Earthworm Jim could. Now, he is back once more, thanks to this recent update from Nintendo. Earthworm Jim 2 can be played through the Nintendo Switch Online’s SNES app. In addition to this piece of nostalgia, both Dig Dug 2 and Mappy-Land are also available to play through, this time via the Switch’s NES app....

Streamer LilAggy - best known for his Elden Ring speedruns and completing Dark Souls using poop - installed a mod that adds the blizzard effect from the Consecrated Snowfield across the entire Lands Between. As we previously reported, a wall in Volcano Manor was discovered that seemed to be a secret illusory wall, though it ultimately led nowhere particularly interesting. It seems, though, that this was just a glitch after all. Souls YouTuber Zullie the Witch tested the wall after the new patch and found it no longer breaks. That means players no longer need to worry about a wealth of secrets hidden behind every flat surface....
